Moderate drinking CAN lead to alcoholism. It is a possibility so we must be extremely careful. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. This is not a warning for people who walk in grace to be stifled because they are worried about legalistic Christians criticizing them. Not necessarily. For many, many people it is unwise to drink at all.
What this passage means is that wine and beer are powerful and one must not be led astray. The fact that one could be led astray by these liquid entities should give every Christian a heart check. I have heard often people comparing overeating to overdrinking. When Christians drink socially, many churchgoers believe they could cause other believers to stumble or be confused. In , 60 percent agree and 32 percent disagree. The portion who say drinking socially could cause others to stumble dropped slightly from 63 percent in Attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol use vary based on age, geography, denominational affiliation, and other demographic factors.
Among Protestants who attend church weekly, only 25 percent agree the Bible bans alcohol. But 64 percent agree that Christians drinking alcohol can cause other believers to stumble. So only 37 percent say they drink alcohol. Among churchgoers with evangelical beliefs, only 29 percent agree the Bible bans alcohol. But 74 percent agree that Christians drinking alcohol can cause other believers to stumble.
So only 33 percent say they drink alcohol. Churchgoers ages are evenly split on their alcohol consumption, with 50 percent saying they drink and 50 percent saying they do not; 41 percent of churchgoers ages say they drink, while 59 percent do not; and 44 percent of to year-olds say they consume alcohol, while 56 percent do not.
Christians should depend on God alone to meet their needs. When you become addicted to alcohol, Christ becomes not enough. Your joy becomes tied up in a beverage. Your hope is lost without it.
