The decision is taken completely by the professors here and people are shortlisted for the interviews. Another major difference between the two is that M. Tech is a 2 year course, whereas MS in India can extend as long as years till your project gets completed. As I said in my previous post, M. Tech is a higher level of B. Tech, the structure is the same but everything will be much deeper in concepts. Advanced courses, tougher assignments, a project which is mostly selected to be a commercial one so as to get a good job in future.
But M. S is a lower level PhD, it only deals with research work ,very less classroom courses. So, if you want to continue with PhD then go for M. Tech with a commercial specialization.
