I know a living example of this same predicament. A man who met a woman and fell in love with her. His guilt is that he gone out with her even though he knew it was gonna come to an end. He thinks so because he was taken already but he can't stop loving her.
He will always love her and she will always love him. It does not matter what the cause is. Whether one or the other falls out of love, or one passes on, or if external pressure force them to separate. The singer is in a living hell and is expressing it the only way he can and doing an excellent job of it.

He met her and eventhough he knew they can't be together he still gone out with her for some time. But then came the day where he felt he couldn't do that anymore so he broke up with her and let her know in this song that she means the world for him and that the day will come when he will feel ready and marry her. I thought that the man was committing suicide and his wife or girlfriend was pregnant with his child but he just felt so hollow and empty and couldn't live anymore.
But he felt really guilty about leaving her and he wanted her to remember him while in heaven hes watching over her, 'spend a life time with you' and 'watched you sleeping for a while' but they also use go fight a lot as a couple but now that hes gone she is remembering their happy moments together while he looks down at her missing her, so know hes gone they remember the relationship better than it was ' we had our doubts but now we're fine'.
Yeah, but why? Of course that does not exclude this "unfaithful" theory. I'd say she is simply leaving him - cause perhaps she's now looking for "real love" and not just "eternal right" of receiving love. Yeah, maybe she found her love.
