What is the difference between a shader and a texture

A texture can only do so much. The texture image alone cannot react to the lights in the scene, and has no animatable parameters, unless you count loading a set of frames as being animatable. Shaders on the other hand can react to lights, your camera, or really anything in your scene that you want to have effect your shader, can modify the geometry they are applied to entirely, and are completely animatable. Except for being able to load a series of Frames or maybe doing some morphing or compositing tricks, textures are pretty static.

Shaders on the other hand can be highly dynamic. Another thing, textures, no matter how big their resolution is, will fall apart if the camera gets close enough to the surface; you will start seeing individual texels. Well you are right about that. Shaders are hard to come by, but if yo search a bit, they can be found.

Search google. I think the problem is that artists have this bizarre propensity to want to keep every little thing they make for themselves, while still expecting music and software to be either free or dirt cheap, oddly enough. You know, this site is very active. If every artist here made an effort to produce just one free public shader a month for their respective software, each app represented on this site could have literally thousands of, hopefully, quality, free shaders available in about 6 months time.

In order to get a subscription for 30 days or 14 days or whatever, a user has to produce one quality asset for the depot. Do you mean that only ppl who know programing will be able to have the free shaders?

No, not at all. Use maps, use procedurals, use whatever you want. Just make a shader that looks like a particular surface; a piece of rock, a bathroom tile, carpeting, hair, the bottom of a CD, a rusted metal plate, a can of coca cola, an animatable snow pattern for a television screen, different types of glass, anything you want. The purpose would be to make a shader that anyone using that software could drop into a library and use as is, or make a couple tweaks to get what they desire.

There are other situations where a different built-in shader, or even a custom written shader might be appropriate - such as liquids, foliage, refractive glass, particle effects, cartoony, illustrative or other artistic effects, or other special effects like night vision, heat vision or x-ray vision, etc.

Is something described here not working as you expect it to? It might be a Known Issue. Please check with the Issue Tracker at issuetracker. Legacy Documentation: Version 5. For example flat color is 0, and fastshader is 1. If this special multi-material texture is exported as a PSD, the different materials will be different shades of grey in the alpha channel, for use in rebuilding materials in another app.

Shaded refers to the final rendered look including lighting, shadows, and any other render options, even fibers. IOW, shading on top of shading.
